Virgo 2006 Edition

Happy Birthday to all Virgos!

The sign of Virgo is represented by the mythical figure of Demeter, the corn maiden, the goddess of fertility. This makes it the only sign of the zodiac to be represented by a woman. She symbolizes the harvest, the bringing in, winnowing and finally storing of the summer crop. The corn maiden chooses to use her creativity for organizing a project rather than supplying the vision for new projects.

Virgo is meticulous, discriminating, practical, health conscious and hard working. It can also be perfectionist, petty and critical. Virgo’s two favorite descriptive words are: appropriate and counter-productive.

Speaking of Virgins… Mary, the mother of Jesus, eventually replaced all those who previously bore the title Queen of Heaven: Ishtar, Inanna, Isis, Nut, etc. Mary is depicted standing over a snake or crescent moon with the 12 stars signifying the Zodiac in her crown. Do any of those symbols sound familiar to the Goddess worshippers out there?

The Catholic Church tried to fight the worship of Mary as heresy for centuries but eventually annexed the symbols. Interestingly, the medieval cathedrals, chapels & churches of France are said to illustrate the constellation Virgo by their placement.

The monthly installment of The Great Astrological Light Bulb Joke:

Q: How many Virgos does it take to change a light bulb?

A: Approximately 1.000000 with an error of +/- 1 millionth.

Inga's Celebration Calendar

August 23rd the Sun moves into Virgo, this is Scott’s birthday and a New Moon also in Virgo

To learn more about actively using the Moon's energy in your life, see The Moon Through the Signs and Moon Phases. These guides are located in our Library.

September 1st is the First Friday of the month and the Dunthor Open House! Click here to see details below.

September 4th is Labor Day

Labor Day is a most appropriate (there’s that word!) holiday for Virgo:

It celebrates service, work and daily routines.

It marks the beginning of the school year.

There is no official record of who proposed it, although it was invested as a holiday in September to separate it from Mayday (Mayday is Labor day in the “rest” of the world but not in the US because of Mayday’s ties to Union strikes and the Haymarket riot in Chicago)

"Labor Day differs in every essential from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."

September 7th is a Full Moon in Pisces

September 23rd the Sun moves into Libra

Stone of the Sign - Nautilus

This pendant is a cabochon cut from the curve of a nautilus shell. It is wrapped in a sculpted setting of sterling silver. The chambered nautilus is an ocean dwelling cephalopod with a romantic history. Oliver Wendell Holmes referred to nautilus as “the ship of pearl”. Jules Verne named his ship after it in 20,000 leagues under the sea. The nautilus appeared in Earth’s oceans in the Cambrian period several million years before the first primitive fish. The external shell of these animals provides both protection and rigid open spaces that can be filled with gas for buoyancy. They can descend to a depth of 476 meters. As far back as the ancient Greeks, the shell of the chambered nautilus has been a symbol of perfection. This shell’s shape can be described mathematically as a logarithmic spiral. Silver is a conductor of energy. It is said to aid in communication and to improve the transmission of nerve impulses. According to tradition, it is a good metal for healing purposes because it is in tune with the body. Silver can reduce anxiety and help you to relax when solving problems. It is believed to help conduct the energy of stones into your body and auric field.

Inga's Space

Last month I joined my mom and some of my fellow students at the PHASE Conclave in Cumberland, Maryland. Cumberland is the location of Fort Cumberland, a very scenic civil war town. We drove through the Allegheny Mountains and passed Antietam Creek. The theme of the conclave was The Astrological Tradition in Hindsight. The presenters plan was to present “the full sweep of the Western astrological tradition in a single intense week, beginning from its pre-Hellenistic Babylonian and Egyptian antecedents, and ending with the Renaissance astrology of Western Europe.”

The first part was review for all of us Kepler College students but then Robert got into some techniques we had not seen before, like the Kurios and zodiacal releasing. Anyway, it was really fun and Cumberland would have been a great historic town to explore if we hadn’t been in seminars from 9 AM to 10 PM each day. There was even a 7:15 morning session every day that Mom and I never even got to!
