Libra 2006 Edition

Happy Birthday Librans!

The Sun moves into the constellation Libra on the day of the autumnal equinox. Libra is the one sign of the Zodiac represented by an inanimate object: the scales. The name Libra comes from the Libyan Goddess of Holy Law who carried the scales of judgment, and her counterpart in Egypt was Maat, the spirit of equilibrium, of justice, truth and rightness. Libra is elegant and charming, a lover of harmony. Libra has excellent judgment and leadership ability despite its impatience with criticism. Libra is able to see both sides of any issue, exhibiting impartiality bordering on indecisiveness. It is a Cardinal Air sign, hence it is masculine in nature.

The monthly installment of The Great Astrological Light Bulb Joke:

Q. How many Librans does it take to change a light bulb?

A. Er, two, or maybe one. No, on second thought, make that two. Is that OK with you?

Inga's Celebration Calendar

September 22nd is the Autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun Enters Libra, this is a New Moon in Virgo and a Solar Eclipse. The glyph for Libra represents the setting sun expressing the balance between night and day: Equinox. Equinoxes are the two points in the year (March 21 and September 23) when the Sun crosses the celestial equator. At these times, day and night in Northern and Southern hemispheres are of equal length. The Spring (vernal) equinox occurs midway between the winter and summer solstices. The autumnal equinox occurs midway between the summer and winter solstices. The autumn equinoctial Festival of Mabon mirrors the spring equinoctial festival of Oestara with the Light and Dark forces of the Universe switching ascendancy.

If you click on the Astronomy Pic Of The Day site and then use their search feature to find “solstice”. You’ll see some incredible pictures including Stonehenge and Delphi.

Stone of the Sign - Charoite

This pendant is a small oval charoite set in a stylized heart framed setting made from sterling silver wire. Charoite is found in only one location along the Chary River at Aldan in Russia. It was discovered in 1978 so there is no long standing tradition of its properties. It is in tune with Pisces and Aquarius and is useful to accelerate spiritual growth and open the third eye chakra. Silver is a conductor of energy and is said to aid in communication and improve the transmission of nerve impulses. According to tradition, it is a good metal for healing purposes because it is in tune with the body. Silver can reduce anxiety and help you to relax when solving problems. It is believed to help conduct the energy of stones into your body and auric field. I have a similar one in gold in the online catalog.

On sale this month for $35.00 USD.

Inga's Space

I found the greatest resource that I think you’ll enjoy. The Teaching Company  has college courses on CD, audio download, or DVD on any subject you might be interested in. I have heard the Alexander & the Hellenistic Age and the Mythology of the near East courses and I will be listening to Classical Mythology next. The King County Library has quite a few of them available but they are very popular. I am #23 in the queue for the History of World War II DVDs.

We found a great new park in Burien. It is called Eagle Landing Park and features two acres of tidelands and six acres of wooded uplands. There is a 257 step, metal staircase from the Seahurst ridge all the way to the pristine beach on the Sound. Amazing! Freya trotted all the way down all those stairs and ran right into the water. After walking the entire 247 feet of beach, we climbed all the way back up again. A lovely outing and worth visiting if you find yourself in our neck of the woods.

Letters from our Readers

We think of this newsletter as a community forum. You, our friends and clients, are welcome to participate. We celebrate diversity and we'll print whatever you send in be it Wiccan, Christian, Pagan, New Age, etc., as long as it reflects Love. You may choose a one-time holiday to write about or have a regular column. We'll give you space and a byline! Please send in your own book reviews, ideas for rituals, ideas about stones, your journal excerpts, your experiences and most of all, ask us questions. We love answering questions!

From Scott:

"It is necessary to the happiness of man, that he be mentally faithful to himself. Infidelity does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what he does not believe. It is impossible to calculate the moral mischief, if I may so express it, that mental lying has produced in society. When a man has so far corrupted and prostituted the chastity of his mind, as to subscribe his professional belief to things he does not believe, he has prepared himself for the commission of every other crime." -- Thomas Paine

"If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace." -- Thomas Paine

The Duncan Domain

Speaking of cool parks,  Inga, Freya and I checked out yet another park this month. Unlike Eagle Landing, this park has been around for a very long time. Somehow, despite being long term South King County residents and avid park walkers, we've neglected visiting Lincoln Park. It's next to the Fauntleroy ferry dock in Seattle, has an extensive section of Puget Sound beach and 135 acres of beautiful woods and lawns. It is very popular with dog owners and it gave us plenty of chances to practice keeping Freya calm as other dogs walk by. Thanks to Karin turning us on to The Dog Whisperer, a show on National Geographic about a dog behavorist, we now have a simple, effective way to let her know we want her to remain calm vs. leaping, lunging and getting essentially nuts when other dogs are near.

Meanwhile, I've got two motorcycle tours to write up for my website. In July, I went to Colorado with my brothers, Paul and Eric, plus Trev and Grady and then in August, I went to Crater Lake, Mt. Shasta and the California redwoods with Joe and Lenny. So I've got a zillion photos to dig though and a lot of text to write. The photo below is of my vintage Honda (1977 CB750F2) at the end of the road at Mt. Shasta, some 8,000 feet high. Between the two trips and thousands of miles, I've stood in natural sacred portals, projected my consciousness and intent into ones I couldn't reach physically, and created ones where none existed. Along the way, I've conversed with my body, my motorcycle, various Elementals, my spirit guides, redwood spirits, people I've met along the way, my riding buddies and Inga by phone, two or three times per day. As a result, I've experienced healings, revelations, and insights and counted my blessings as well. -- Scott Bruce Duncan */:-)
