Libra 2005 Edition

Happy Birthday Librans!

Libra is the one sign of the Zodiac represented by an inanimate object: the scales. The name Libra comes from the Libyan Goddess of Holy Law who carried the scales of judgment, and her counterpart in Egypt was Maat, the spirit of equilibrium, of justice, truth and rightness. The Sun moves into the constellation Libra on the day of the autumnal equinox. Libra is elegant and charming, a lover of harmony. Libra has excellent judgment and leadership ability despite its impatience with criticism. Libra is able to see both sides of any issue, exhibiting impartiality bordering on indecisiveness. It is a Cardinal, Air sign; hence it is masculine in nature.

The monthly installment of The Great Astrological Light Bulb Joke:

Q. How many Librans does it take to change a light bulb?

A. Er, two, or maybe one. No, on second thought, make that two. Is that OK with you?

Note: I have no idea who originally wrote this. Erika sent it to me years ago and I still think it’s as funny as it is insightful!

Inga's Celebration Calendar

September 22nd is the Autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, The Sun Enters Libra, and The Mabon festival marks the fruit harvest.

The glyph for Libra represents the setting sun expressing the balance between night and day: Equinox. Equinoxes are the two points in the year (March 21 and September 23) when the Sun crosses the celestial equator: at these times, day and night in Northern and Southern hemispheres are of equal length. The spring (vernal) equinox occurs midway between the winter and summer solstices; the autumnal equinox occurs midway between the summer and winter solstices. The autumn equinoctial Festival of Mabon mirrors the spring equinoctial festival of Oestara with the Light and Dark forces of the Universe switching ascendancy.

Inga's Space

First, I get to spill the news: We bought a boat! I’ll let Scott tell the whole story in his column.

Then, I am reprinting another book review from the archives because I find myself continually recommending this book. Maybe I’ll run them all and then write some new ones. The link will take you directly to Amazon.com so you can see the price and availability. It is interesting to see that in how ever many years it has been since writing this review, the only room unpainted and mostly un-feng-shuied in the house is the kitchen. The rest are done, yahoo! Anyway, if you don’t already have this book, you need it!

The Western Guide to Feng Shui : Room by Room by Terah Kathryn Collins

I have read several Feng Shui books and all of them have left me with the feeling that this would be something interesting to study when I retire! But not this one... her explanations and instructions are clear, logical and easy to put to use right now with what you already have to work with. There are two primary schools of Feng Shui (pronounced fung-shway) the Form School and the Compass School. This book focuses on the Form School because the author feels that "these techniques produce excellent results and are generally easier to integrate into the Western lifestyle."

The Bagua Map is the key to making Feng Shui work for you. Terah Kathryn Collins teaches you how to use the Bagua map or grid with your home as a whole and then extends the system into each room. Here is a quote from the book: "People have solved many problems using the Bagua Map. It's uncanny how often people find a correlation between the way their homes are designed and their ongoing problems. One couple found that the Wealth and Prosperity area of their home was located in a bathroom with leaky plumbing, symbolic of the continual leaking away of their savings account. Another couple discovered that the Career area of their home was located in the garage, which was crammed with junk, a perfect metaphor for the stagnant condition of their professional lives. A single woman discovered that her Love and Marriage area was located on a back porch full of empty pots and dead plants - symbols of her empty dead love life."

Pretty scary, huh? I learned that the career, or water, area of our home is the front porch and surrounding environs so watch for some changes there over the summer. Overall, I found the book very validating of my intuition and feelings about my home and worse... It has given me permission for some of the wilder color schemes I hadn't previously broached with Scott! Of course, seeing how he's always wanted to live in Pee Wee Herman's Playhouse, it shouldn't be a problem!

Letters from our Readers

We think of this newsletter as a community forum. You, our friends and clients, are welcome to participate. We celebrate diversity and we'll print whatever you send in be it Wiccan, Christian, Pagan, New Age, etc., as long as it reflects Love. You may choose a one-time holiday to write about or have a regular column. We'll give you space and a byline! Please send in your own book reviews, ideas for rituals, ideas about stones, your journal excerpts, your experiences and most of all, ask us questions. We love answering questions!

From Jacqui:

Cats in Sinks! Honest to God, never would have believed that someone does a site like this- let's think of something: Alligators in toilets?

From Laura:

Women are like apples on trees. The best ones are at the top of the tree.

Most men don't want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt. Instead, they just take the rotten apples from the ground that aren't as good, but easy.......

The apples at the top think something is wrong with them, when in reality, they're amazing. They just have to wait for the right man to come along, the one who's brave enough to climb all the way to the top of the tree.

Now Men... Men are like a fine wine. They begin as grapes, and it's up to women to stomp the crap out of them until they turn into something acceptable to have dinner with.

And I received this very sad notice from Astrology et al in Seattle:

Hi Everyone:

With a heavy heart, I am informing all our good customers that we will be closing our retail outlet by October 31st, 2005.  After 30 years of being a retail outlet for the Pacific Northwest, we can no longer keep our brick and mortar doors open.  The state of business on the North end of University Way has fallen to such a state of disarray, with gangs and drug trafficking reaching such an aggressive state, that I do not feel safe being here.  Safety for my family, and my customers who venture here, is my main reason for closing our store.  Our online & mail order business will continue in full force.

Our Phone Numbers will still be active (206 548-1095).  You can always call us for any of your book and gift needs, and I will ship it postage free or heavily discounted, depending on the amount and weight.  Our website will be more interactive, with an easier search and find engine.  www.astrologyetal.com

All of October, we will be having a clearance sale.  ALL gifts are 50% off.  All new tarot cards will be 25% off.  All Metaphysical books will be 10 to 30% off.  Calendars are 40% off.  Astrology books new and used will not be discounted, as we are continuing our online astrology book sales.

We are NOT stopping our learning center: classes and workshops will still be sponsored by us, and we are actively looking for a safe and peaceful venue to place them in.  Laura's astrology classes are still ongoing, and we do not foresee any delay in them.

We are very sad that it has come to this, but with every end, a beginning is created.

With much gratitude and humble appreciation,

Thank you.

The Duncan Domain

As Inga mentioned above, we are now the proud owners of a very special boat. This may seem sudden but it actually started for us at the Seattle Boat Show during the dark, wet winter of 1990. We tried to buy a boat back then but it just wasn't right at the time. It has taken fifteen years for the essential alignment to take shape and we've ended up with the exact same hand built boat we wanted back then from Sam Devlin, a designer and builder in Olympia, Washington.

The recent reemergence of boating in my life began during my motorcycle trip earlier this year while I was sitting on a big rock in a river in the Denali National Park  As I sat there immersed in the beauty of that place, I became very aware as to how far my motorcycling touring has taken me away from Inga and Freya. I then realized that this motorcycle journey of mine, some 70,000 miles over 7 years, was a chapter of my life that was ready to be wrapped up and closed, at least in its current incarnation. I didn't realize at the time that the next chapter would be boating but the stage was set for synchronicity to work its magic. Click here to read more, see pictures, etc.
