Gemini 2006 Edition

Happy Birthday Geminians!

Gemini, the last sign of the Spring season, is a complex and often contradictory sign producing both the virtue of versatility, and the vices of two-facedness and flightiness. Gemini is a mutable, Air sign and is therefore masculine in nature.

Gemini is curious, communicative and popular with others as long as it does not allow its skepticism and sarcasm to isolate it. Its mental agility and energy allow it to easily grasp any subject requiring analytical skills though it may avoid the labor of memorization and practice. If the values of discipline and attention to detail are not learned early in life, Gemini may be seen as unreliable and evasive as it flits from one interest to another always searching for variety. It risks becoming a dilettante, by dabbling in so many interests that it is unable to develop any one of them. Gemini is fond of travel and changes of atmosphere. Mercury, the ruler of Gemini, is the only Greco-Roman god not assigned a particular place of worship but in myths he is often met with at crossroads.

The monthly installment of The Great Astrological Light Bulb Joke:

Q. How many Geminis does it take to change a light bulb?

A. Two, but the job never gets done-they just keep discussing who is supposed to do it and how it's supposed to be done!

Note: I have no idea who originally wrote this. Erika sent it to me years ago and I still think it’s as funny as it is insightful!

Stone of the Sign - Crystal

This is a fine crystal point that I wrapped in gold colored artist wire. It would make a great pendant or pendulum. The names quartz and crystal both derive from the Greek krustallos meaning ice. It is used industrially for glassware and optical lenses. Clear quartz crystal resonates to Gemini and the fact that quartz or rock crystal is so incredibly common on this planet indicates to me that communication and adaptability to ever-changing situations are the critical issues we are all working on here on Earth. Clear Quartz will help you to clarify your goals and see through your issues so that you do not get lost in minutiae.

We celebrate diversity and we'll print whatever you send in be it Wiccan, Christian, Pagan, New Age, etc., as long as it reflects Love. You may choose a one-time holiday to write about or have a regular column. We'll give you space and a byline! Please send in your own book reviews, ideas for rituals, ideas about stones, your journal excerpts, your experiences and most of all, ask us questions. We love answering questions!

Quotes from Scott:

"True greatness consists in being great in little things". -- Charles Simmons

"We do not need more intellectual power, we need more spiritual power…..We do not need more of the things that are seen, we need more of the things that are unseen." - Calvin Coolidge

Here is another one of those horrible “test yourself” emails from Vicki:

The Dementia Test

Below are four (4) questions and a bonus question. You have to answer them instantly. You can't take your time, answer all of them immediately. OK?

Let's find out just how clever you really are....

Ready? GO!!!

First Question:

You are participating in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer: If you answered that you are first then you are absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you are second!
Try not to screw up next time.
Now answer the second question, but don’t take as much time as you took for the first question, OK?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Second Question:

If you overtake the last person, then you are...?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST Person?
You're not very good at this, are you?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Third Question:

Very tricky arithmetic! Note: This must be done in your head only! Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.

Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000. Now add 10. What is the total?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did you get 5000?
The correct answer is actually 4100.
If you don’t believe it, check it with a calculator!
Today is definitely not your day, is it?
Maybe you'll get the last question right....
Maybe.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Fourth Question:

Mary's father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini, 4. Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did you Answer Nunu?
NO! Of course it isn't.
Her name is Mary. Read the question again!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Okay, now the bonus round:

A mute person goes into a shop and wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing his teeth he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done.

Next, a blind man comes into the shop who wants to buy a pair of sunglasses; how does HE indicate what he wants?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He just has to open his mouth and ask...
It's really very simple.... Like you!
The Duncan Domain
Freya and I spent some quality time in the yard during Taurus. A lot of weeds had sprung up in our yard this Spring and the task of removing them all seemed rather daunting. But once I stopped freaking out about it and got on my hands and knees and started pulling them, the work became very therapeutic; the smell of the fresh green plants, the feel of the dirt on my hands, the breeze across my skin, and the serenity of our yard. While I did this, Freya chased and mulched pine cones that I tossed for her. She'll do this endlessly as long as I keep throwing them. I figure it's good exercise and lots of fun for her while helping to cut down on my annual bark bill.
Once the tension and anxiety of day to day life faded away a bit, I spent some time meditating. I often cleanse my chakras as a way to clear my mind and relax my breathing. At some point, I realized that there are seven stone steps in our backyard. This makes for a wonderful chakra cleansing ritual as there are seven of them, one for each of the physical chakras. The steps slant up a slope so I use the lowest stone as the root chakra and when I reach the top stone, I'm working on the crown chakra. As I stand on each stone, I visualize the color of that chakra, inhale Spirit and Earth energy, blend it in my belly and then exhale it into the chakra being cleansed and strengthened. When the chakra is clear and bright, I exhale the excess energy into the stone I’m standing on, thus keeping only what I need and enabling that stone to hold my intention and clarity for this chakra.
This last point has been of particular interest for me. I often find myself craving an accumulation of power, more than what I need, to compensate for the lack of security and lack of control that I often feel in response to the events unfolding in the daily news. During one of my chakra cleansing rituals in the backyard, I realized the error behind this craving. I could see that having more energy than others would result in my manipulation of outcomes and controlling others according to what I think is right and proper. This is certainly not my intent. My goal is to heal, not control. (Think of the trap that unfolds in the Lord of the Rings.) So I've been paying special attention, while pulling the energy of Spirit and Earth into my body and mind to balance and nourish them, to return the excess, blended energy back into Earth. This strengthens the bond between us and opens me up to accepting help from those around me, both corporeal and non-corporeal.
Once I've completed a thorough cleansing, I'm always relieved to find that I've elevated my vibrational rate to one above the frequency of fear that is constantly broadcasted in our daily lives. In other words, I find myself free from the fight or flight mode that is all too common these days. From this vantage point of clarity and peace, I immediately become aware of all the opportunities for enlightened action that are essentially shut down when I'm swimming in the frequency of fear. Keep in mind that these options are not news to my conscious mind. I'm fully aware of them but when I'm fearful, expending energy on such things seems very risky or not even feasible. No matter how many times I do this, I'm shocked at how such a subtle shift of consciousness provides such a profoundly different outlook as to what is possible in my life. My mind reels at the thought of what a different world this would be if enough of us broke free from the frequency of fear. As this is truly a much more desirable state of consciousness, I ask my guides to show me how to maintain this state of clarity and the answer is always "Practice, practice, practice." Oh. Yeah, I knew that. Duh! (Isn't that always the answer to such a question of Spirit?) Anyway, if you'd like to try the chakra cleansing stones, check them out the next time you come over for a first Friday. I'll be happy to guide you if you ask me to. You may find me out there practicing.
Meanwhile, here's a poem that was read at NORWAC, the annual Northwest Astrology Conference, that we just attended. – Scott Bruce Duncan */:-)
The Journey
One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice--
though the whole house began to tremble and you felt the old tug at your ankles.
"Mend my life!" each voice cried. But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do, though the wind pried with its stiff fingers at the very foundations,
though their melancholy was terrible.
It was already late enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen branches and stones.
But little by little, as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice which you slowly
recognized as your own, that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper into the world,
determined to do the only thing you could do--
determined to save the only life you could save.
