Little Bighorn Battlefield Tour 2000

Day 6 - Tetons means what in French???
Yellowstone to Craters of the Moon Nat. Monument, ID via Grand Teton Nat. Park - 268 miles

Goofing off while we're doing a load of laundry We took a break at the Grand Tetons National Park and availed ourselves of the convenient laundromat and deli. The view of Tetons just kept getting better as we traveled south and we finally gave up taking pictures of it as the photos could not possibly do them justice.

Aerial view of Teton Pass

This fine stretch of road is Teton Pass on Hwy 22, west of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It may not look like much from this point of view, but on a bike, it's a blast! 10% grade, little traffic, excellent roads conditions and it climbs to well over 8,000 ft. The curve featured in this photo has a delightful twist; a reverse camber! Add that 10% grade and a little too much speed to really get the adrenaline flowing! Wow!

Nuclear Reactors sign

So we come down out of the mountains, pass through Idaho Falls and head west across the Idaho plains for Craters of the Moon. It was flat, desolate and had one hell of a cross wind coming through. We tried fast, slow, you name it but no relief. So we battled through and we finally stopped at this rest area exhausted only to find that this area is infested with nuclear reactors!

Grandpa's

Upon reaching Arco, Idaho, we stopped in the local grocery store for supplies and got a great tip from the checkout clerk on where to eat. Grandpa's BBQ was run by wonderful, warm people and the food was equally delightful. Despite how idyllic and sleepy Arco seemed, we selfishly advised them to move to Seattle to open up a restaurant there. We made it sound like the streets are paved with gold!

Craters of the Moon

The first and absolute best campsite in the Craters of the Moon National Monument. Trust me, Lenny insisted we check them all! We slept under the stars on a bed of volcanic cinders. It was very comfortable and the view was breathtaking!
