Aries 2005 Edition

Aries, symbolized variously by the ram, ewe or lamb, has represented new starts since antiquity. Spring fever is not just a cliché. It is that impatient feeling we all have during the time the Sun is passing through Aries. We feel full of (Aries) new ideas and new starts but we may not have the (Taurus) resources, time or proper weather just yet to carry them out. Take advantage of this creative energy by making plans and getting in shape. The active time of the year is here.

The monthly installment of The Great Astrological Light Bulb Joke:

Q. How many Ariens does it take to change a light bulb?

A. Just one. You want to make something of it?

Note: I have no idea who originally wrote this. Erika sent it to me years ago and I still think it’s as funny as it is insightful!

Inga's Celebration Calendar

March 20th is the Vernal Equinox, Ostara, The First day of Spring and the Sun enters Aries: Happy New Year! The Spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere is the beginning of the new zodiacal year. The rise of the constellation Aries indicates the beginning of a new cycle in evolutionary development. The equinoxes are the two times during the year when the dark of night and the light of day are in balance or equal.

The vernal equinox is Ostara, from the name of a German Goddess of fertility, Oestarae. She is the deific equivalent of Aurora, the personification of the sunrise. Her name is where East and Easter both come from. This is logical considering that the sun rises in the East.

A creature associate of hers is Ostara's hare or the Easter bunny. One story is that she transformed a pet bird into a rabbit in order to amuse the children who follow her everywhere. Even though the bird is now a hare, she still lays eggs, only now they are brightly colored eggs. Another version has Ostara herself becoming a hare in order to distribute colored eggs in the Goddess' honor. Neither work very well for me, but these are how later people explain the pagan tradition of Easter eggs.

Stone of the Sign - Carnelian

This pendant is an antique carnelian warrior intaglio that I wrapped in a single sterling silver wire. Intaglio is a style of engraving or carving below the surface so that design is hollowed out and an impression from the design yields an image in relief. It is sometimes called 'hollow relief or 'coelanaglyphic. It is the opposite of a cameo. Carnelian will help you shake off sadness, start a new project, enhance your assertiveness for engaging in competition or self-promotion. Wear carnelian when you need to shine as an individual.  Carnelian, according to tradition, resonates with Aries and is used for energy, physical vitality and initiating activity. Silver is a conductor of energy and is said to aid in communication, it improves the transmission of nerve impulses. According to tradition, it is a good metal for healing purposes because it is in tune with the body. Silver can reduce anxiety and help you to relax when solving problems. It is believed to help conduct the energy of stones into your body and auric field.

Here's my final paper from last quarter at Kepler College where I'm earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Astrological Studies:

John Dee, His Historical Significance

John Dee is the man most popularly associated with the intersecting spheres of science, astrology and magic in Elizabethan England. A controversial and famous personage for most of his life, he is said to be the inspiration for both the character of Prospero in William Shakespeare's The Tempest and Faust in Christopher Marlowe's Dr Faustus. He was acquainted with the occultist Jerome Cardan, cartographers Gerard Mercator, Matthias Haker, and geographer Abraham Ortelius. He was a long time friend and tutor of Sir William Pickering, the English Ambassador to Charles V at Brussels and was introduced to the young King Edward VI by William Cecil, later Lord Burghley. The Duncan Domain

We've been doing some long overdue remodeling in the house. We hired Kevin, a good friend and superb contractor, to rip out the upstairs bathroom. As it needed a complete overhaul, Kevin gutted the room right down to the studs. Inga and I spent quite a bit of time working on the design of the new bathroom in order to get the most out of the space while employing Feng Shui principals to get the energy right. Prior to the remodel, the room has always had a muddled, confused feel and once it was gutted, the bare room with its studs exposed, immediately achieved a noticeable peacefulness. Then, as the new room took shape, the energy shifted, step by step. Once finished, it retained its new found peacefulness while gaining a whole new character. This room falls squarely in our "fame and reputation" section as defined by Feng Shui and as you may have read in an earlier newsletter, minor changes to this room have produced substantial results in this area. With this complete overhaul, we're wondering how this change will manifest itself. We'll keep you posted.

One neat surprise during the project was finding a crumpled newspaper page inside one of the walls. We gingerly flattened it out to find a January 27, 1948 issue of the Seattle Post Intelligencer. What was really wild was the ad for a minstrel show being held in the Eagles Auditorium at 7th and Union, right across the street where I now work in downtown Seattle. I went to work the next day and realized that the building is still standing and unchanged since 1948.
